Francesca took a sip of her reed tea and shuffled over to the large book of toadlings. âToadling 5.0, toadling 5.0,â she muttered between hums. âOh yes!â she said when she saw the photo. âIâll be right back . . .â
Once Francesca was out of earshot, Amelia squeeed and the friends embraced in a big group hug. âWe found him!â said Amelia. She took a deep breath. âIâve missed him SO MUCH. Suddenly all the annoying little things he does donât matter at all.â
âWELL,â said Florence. âIâM SURE HEâLL BE SMEARING SNOT ALL OVER YOU IN NO TIME.â
Francesca came back into the room and Amelia did an excitable wriggle. But she froze mid-wriggle when she realised Francesca was alone.
âSorry, dears,â she said. âWeâve had a few adoptions today and I havenât had a chance to update the catalogue. It turns out this little one was adopted just before you arrived,â she said.
Amelia frowned. âWhat?â she said. âNo, he canât have been.â
âSorry, my darling, but there are plenty of other toadlings in the pond.â She flicked through the pages. âFinnegan here is marvellous. Such a good toad. He writes dramatic poems and heâs only two years old!â
Tangine stepped forward looking interested, but Florence put out a paw to stop him.
âSO, âOO ADOPTED VINâERR, TOADLING 5.0?â asked Florence.
Francesca lowered her glasses and scratched her head. âHmmm . . .â She was thinking hard for what felt like a lifetime. Amelia resisted the urge to shout HURRY UP! âOh!â Francesca said finally. âIt was a lovely toad . . . I canât for the second life of me remember her name. She was wearing a chefâs hat and an apron. She was very chatty . . .â
âFREDA!â Amelia, Florence, Grimaldi and Tangine said in unison.
âThatâs it!â said Francesca with a chuckle. âDo you know her?â
âWEâRE STARTING TO,â Florence grumbled.
âWhere does Freda live?â asked Amelia urgently.
âIâm afraid I canât disclose that information,â said Freda with a smile. âIf youâre not going to adopt today, may I kindly ask you to come back another time? We have a rather long queue forming.â
Amelia looked round and saw a neat line of toads eagerly waiting to adopt. âWe do actually know Freda,â said Amelia desperately. âBut Iâve forgotten her address.â
Francesca was beginning to look agitated. âI told you, my dear, I cannot share that information with you.â
Amelia decided it was probably a good time to leave. When Francesca turned around to pour herself another cup of reed tea, Amelia quickly took the photo of Vincent from the catalogue.
Once the friends were outside, Amelia let out a huge âAAAAAAAAARGH!â
âWhat are we meant to do now?!â asked Grimaldi quietly. âThis place is HUGE. Itâll take forever to find Fredaâs house!â
âWAIT!â said Tangine. âPink is SO last year!â;
âWHAT YOU YABBERING ON ABOUT, FLOOF?â said Florence.
âFreda was going on about her new house in the market,â said Tangine. âShe said it was pink! With blue tulips in the garden!â
âTangine,â said Amelia with a grin. âYou are the BEST. Letâs go and
