Francesca took a sip of her reed tea and shuffled over to the large book of toadlings. ‘Toadling 5.0, toadling 5.0,’ she muttered between hums. ‘Oh yes!’ she said when she saw the photo. ‘I’ll be right back . . .’

Once Francesca was out of earshot, Amelia squeeed and the friends embraced in a big group hug. ‘We found him!’ said Amelia. She took a deep breath. ‘I’ve missed him SO MUCH. Suddenly all the annoying little things he does don’t matter at all.’

‘WELL,’ said Florence. ‘I’M SURE HE’LL BE SMEARING SNOT ALL OVER YOU IN NO TIME.’

Francesca came back into the room and Amelia did an excitable wriggle. But she froze mid-wriggle when she realised Francesca was alone.

‘Sorry, dears,’ she said. ‘We’ve had a few adoptions today and I haven’t had a chance to update the catalogue. It turns out this little one was adopted just before you arrived,’ she said.

Amelia frowned. ‘What?’ she said. ‘No, he can’t have been.’

‘Sorry, my darling, but there are plenty of other toadlings in the pond.’ She flicked through the pages. ‘Finnegan here is marvellous. Such a good toad. He writes dramatic poems and he’s only two years old!’

Tangine stepped forward looking interested, but Florence put out a paw to stop him.

‘SO, ’OO ADOPTED VIN—ERR, TOADLING 5.0?’ asked Florence.

Francesca lowered her glasses and scratched her head. ‘Hmmm . . .’ She was thinking hard for what felt like a lifetime. Amelia resisted the urge to shout HURRY UP! ‘Oh!’ Francesca said finally. ‘It was a lovely toad . . . I can’t for the second life of me remember her name. She was wearing a chef’s hat and an apron. She was very chatty . . .’

‘FREDA!’ Amelia, Florence, Grimaldi and Tangine said in unison.

‘That’s it!’ said Francesca with a chuckle. ‘Do you know her?’

‘WE’RE STARTING TO,’ Florence grumbled.

‘Where does Freda live?’ asked Amelia urgently.

‘I’m afraid I can’t disclose that information,’ said Freda with a smile. ‘If you’re not going to adopt today, may I kindly ask you to come back another time? We have a rather long queue forming.’

Amelia looked round and saw a neat line of toads eagerly waiting to adopt. ‘We do actually know Freda,’ said Amelia desperately. ‘But I’ve forgotten her address.’

Francesca was beginning to look agitated. ‘I told you, my dear, I cannot share that information with you.’

Amelia decided it was probably a good time to leave. When Francesca turned around to pour herself another cup of reed tea, Amelia quickly took the photo of Vincent from the catalogue.

Once the friends were outside, Amelia let out a huge ‘AAAAAAAAARGH!’

‘What are we meant to do now?!’ asked Grimaldi quietly. ‘This place is HUGE. It’ll take forever to find Freda’s house!’

‘WAIT!’ said Tangine. ‘Pink is SO last year!’;

‘WHAT YOU YABBERING ON ABOUT, FLOOF?’ said Florence.

‘Freda was going on about her new house in the market,’ said Tangine. ‘She said it was pink! With blue tulips in the garden!’

‘Tangine,’ said Amelia with a grin. ‘You are the BEST. Let’s go and
